Powerful, quick, and smart. That was HJ Weiland. He earned nine letters during his three years at Wauwatosa East. HJ played halfback and defensive back on the football team. A bruising tackler who always knew his assignment, he had the strength and speed to match any running back. As a halfback he added shiftiness to his repertoire as he ran around, by, and over defenders. His school record 90 yard run against Shorewood was one for the ages as he took the pitch, juked two defenders, and out ran the rest of the defense for the touchdown. Whether it was using his power up the middle or his shiftiness around end, Weiland could always be counted on for positive yards. A well-liked leader, he was elected captain his senior year and gained 2nd team All Suburban honors. On the track HJ ran the 220, the 440 and the 880 and mile relays. He had the speed to get to the front of the pack and the strength to hold on. Elected captain his senior year, his teammates could always count on words of encouragement from HJ. The 1964 and 1965 Tosa East basketball teams were filled with talented scorers. A play making guard was what was needed to get them the ball and HJ Weiland was that player as the team won Suburban Conference Championships his sophomore and junior years. The 1965 team advanced to the State Tournament in Madison winning the Consolation Championship. The lone underclassman on the ’65 team, Weiland returned as captain in 1966 while leading the Raiders to another successful team. He played basketball for two years at the University of Michigan.
