Don Schuler’s natural athleticism was a marvel to behold. His fierce competitiveness and ability to excel in any sport he chose was remarkable. During his high school years, Don’s talent shone brightly, and he earned seven letters in three different sports, a testament to his versatility and skill. Coach Martin Jackson quickly recognized his abilities as a sophomore, making Don a starting guard on the 1940 basketball team. During his junior and senior years, Don served as Co-Captain of the team and achieved All-Conference honors in 1942. Don was also a two-year starter at quarterback for the football team. He ran the option, which played to his strengths: He could run or pass the ball to gain big yardage and keep the opposing defense guessing with tendencies. Don was not just a player but a leader on the football field. He served as the football Team Captain in his senior year and was a key member of the 1939 Suburban Conference Championship team. Don was a star on the field and on the track. His speed was unmatched, and he excelled as a sprinter, running the 100 and participating on the 880-relay team. His track achievements were yet another testament to his all-around athletic prowess. In 1941 and 1942, Don served as Captain of the Wauwatosa High Bowling Team, an unsanctioned WIAA event. Don’s leadership and commitment to service extended beyond sports. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and flew 35 missions over Europe. For his distinguished service, bravery, and dedication, Don was awarded the Air Medal.
