An all-around athlete, John earned eight letters. As a defensive end in football, he used a rare combination of grace and power to ward off blockers, yet had the quickness and intelligence to cover on pass defense. Making All-Conference as a senior, he also served as the team’s kicker, scoring multiple field goals in two seasons, a rarity at the time.

On the undefeated 1969-70 Suburban Conference basketball team, which played in the state tournament, he was the valuable “sixth man,” a ferocious defender with a knack for putting his teammates in scoring position. His teammate, All-State forward Paul “Ace” Vollmer, once said, “The toughest defender I play against is ‘Bues’ every day in practice.”

But it was in track & field that John truly excelled. A discus thrower, he was the only freshman to earn a letter in track during the 1960s. He was undefeated for two years and won two Suburban Conference championships. His state-leading throw of 175’9” as a senior still stands as the school record more than 50 years later.

Coach John Richmond once said, “Buesing was a quiet leader, the ultimate teammate. They knew he’d ALWAYS do his job and he’d ALWAYS have their back.”
