In 1971, the Tosa East football team won the Suburban Conference Championship. It was the school’s 1st conference championship in 32 years and 1st since Wauwatosa High School was divided into East and West. The unquestioned heart and soul of that team was John Morgan. Whether it was organizing summer practices or cheering on teammates in the weight room, Morgan was the voice who motivated, cajoled, and lead. He was a three year starter on offense and defense and ended his career with three – 1st Team All-Suburban selections and was selected 1st Team All-State at center and nose guard. He was co-MVP of the 1971 championship team. Almost unblockable due to his strength and quickness, Morgan led a defense that set a school record for least yards allowed in a season. His tackles for loss statistics were unmatched. As the center, Morgan led an offensive line whose blocking allowed their running back and quarterback to graduate with all time career records. John was a workout warrior. His weight lifting sessions became legendary. His strength, technique and hard work, provided him the foundation to become the school record holder in the shot put, breaking a record that had been set in 1955. Morgan was undefeated during the regular season winning the Suburban Conference and Suburban Relays, the Regional and Sectional meets, and qualifying for the state meet. Morgan went on to be a three year starter for the University of Kansas Jayhawks football team.
