A tall, slender high school athlete, Judy Carlson was not just a fast runner but a pioneer in the evolution of women’s athletics. Her three-time letter wins in girls’ track and her role in launching the success of women’s athletics at Tosa East under Title XIX is a source of inspiration and pride for all of us. During her sophomore and junior years, she teamed up with Alison Brown, Laura Blank, and Cathy Feierstein to win the girl’s 880 relay at the Girls State Meet in 1972 and 1973. This accomplishment represented the first of many first-place finishes by the Tosa East girl’s track team. Judy’s legendary hard work and passion for winning, combined with her speed and long strides, set a standard for many to emulate as the girls’ track gained popularity and recognition in Tosa East athletics.
