Height has advantages in high school athletics, and Mike Riley leveraged every inch of his 6’5” frame. Mike excelled in 3 varsity sports; Basketball, Volleyball and Baseball. In Basketball, Mike played power forward/center and dominated the boards playing high above the rim. He relentlessly attacked the basket using his physical style of play and thrilled the crowd with his dunks. He was a key contributor for the 1989 extremely talented basketball team, under the leadership of Coach Jim Rebholz. The 1989 team won the Conference Championship and the Class A State Basketball Championship, a feat not achieved since 1948. In 1990, Mike was named the team MVP, a testament to his exceptional skills and leadership. The 1990 team won the Conference Championship once again and was a top ranked team for much of the year ultimately finishing the season with 2 losses. Mike was named to the 1st team all-conference, CNI/Viacom All-Suburban 1st team, Honorable mention All-state and was honored by playing in the WBCA State All-Star basketball game at the Fieldhouse in Madison. He ranks 9th in total defensive rebounds, 3rd in offensive rebounds, and 6th in total rebounds all-time for Tosa East, showcasing his dominance on the court. Mike was also a member of the power front line for the 1990 Boys Volleyball team. Mike played a pivotal role, and his contributions were instrumental in helping Tosa East achieve a Conference Championship and one of the top rankings in the state. Mike received 1st team All-Conference honors for his stellar performance. Finally, Mike showcased his versatility and dedication by playing baseball for three years further solidifying his legacy as a top athlete for Tosa East.
