Bill Buechl was an astounding athlete, especially on the basketball court. Buechl, along with his counterpart, Bob Wolff, achieved incredible success as teammates on the Wauwatosa High School basketball team. The greatest of their accomplishments was leading the team to its first ever state championship in 1948. Buechl scored 41 points to help Wauwatosa win the state tournament, including sinking the final basket to win the championship game. For their roles in the 1948 state championship win, Buechl and Wolff were chosen as the first ever All-State basketball players to be selected from Wauwatosa High School. In addition to his incredible feats on the basketball court, Buechl was also a successful member of the Wauwatosa football and track teams. After graduating from Wauwatosa High School, Buechl went on to play basketball for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
