Don Paape was an outstanding football player during his years at Wauwatosa High. As a member of the swim team, he helped the squad to the 1947 State Championship, 1948 State Runnerup and the 1949 State Championship. But it was on the track where Don had the greatest individual success. As Captain of the track team in 1949, Don led Wauwatosa to a Conference Championship while winning bothe the 100 and 220 yard dash. At the State Track meet that year, Don won both the 100 yd dash (10.4) and the 200 yd dash (20.9). From 1941-1955 the 200 yd dash was run instead of the more common 220 yd dash. Don’s victories in both the 100 and 200 paced Wauwatosa to a State Runnerup finish.
