Jim Gilbert

Assistant Basketball Coach (1968 – 1980)(1988 – 2002)

Jim Gilbert dedicated his coaching career to developing young athletes, preparing JV players for varsity level teams. Gilbert served as the assistant coach to the men’s basketball team from 1969 through 1980 and then was recruited again to be assistant coach from 1988 through 2002. Gilbert also held the role of assistant coach to the football team from 1968 through 1974. In addition to helping coach football and basketball, Gilbert taught English and Psychology at Tosa East for over 30 years. As assistant basketball coach, Gilbert helped the varsity team become conference champions 14 times under three different head coaches and make five different state appearances, including one runner-up finish and one state championship. As an assistant, Gilbert also helped the football team to a conference championship in 1971. While Gilbert was an important factor in achieving each championship, his passion and talent was for developing the younger athletes, ensuring JV players had the fundamental skills and mindset necessary for success at the varsity level. Gilbert mentored and inspired countless student-athletes over the course of his 26-year coaching career.
