John Mitich starred in four sports during his time at Wauwatosa High School, but he truly stood out on the Red Raiders basketball team. In his senior year, Mitich earned All-Conference and Prep Illustrated All-State honors, while also receiving AP All-State Honorable Mention. In 1964, Wauwatosa’s basketball team was named the Suburban Champs after Mitich made the game winning basket over Whitefish Bay. Mitich had earned three varsity letters in basketball.
In track and field, he earned three varsity letters. His team took fourth in the 1963 Track & Field Suburban Indoor Conference Championship and at the State Sectional. In cross-country, he earned one varsity letter and the team took fifth in State Sectionals that same year.
In baseball, Mitich earned three varsity letters and was team captain in both his junior and senior seasons.
Mitich was named Wauwatosa Athlete of the Year in 1964, the top athletic department award. He attended college at UW-LaCrosse, where he played basketball and continued a stellar career on the hardwood.
