John Richmond was an incredible athlete and brought his winning tradition to Tosa East. As an athlete, he earned 10 varsity letters in high school, played football and ran track in college, and even played professional baseball. When Richmond became the head football coach at Tosa East in 1969 he brought an attitude of success, which permeated much of the athletic department. Within two years he led the football team to its 1st conference championship since 1939. Taking over as head coach of the track team in the same academic year, he led the Tosa East team to its 1st state championship in 1972 as they swept the conference relays, conference outdoor, regional, and sectional meets. Giving up the track head coach position to concentrate on football, Richmond coached for 21 years, including four after he retired from teaching. Designing his offense and defense to match each team’s talents, Tosa East won three more conference titles, made five playoff appearances, and never had a losing season. His overall record was 152-86-2. He was recognized as WFCA District XXI Coach of the Year in 1984 and Milwaukee Sentinel Area Coach of the Year in 1987. Additionally, in 1993, Richmond was honored with the WFCA 35 Year Service Award and Victors Award. In recognition of his achievements with the football program, Richmond was inducted into the WFCA Hall of Fame in 1996.
