Perhaps the finest baseball player to come out of Wauwatosa, Marcellus Dawson was also a superb all around athlete. In basketball, Marcellus was a key contributor to the 1999 Conference Championship team. In football, Marcellus thrived as a wide receiver where he earned All Conference his junior and senior years and was Team MVP and All Suburban as a senior in 1998. He also holds the school record for Kick-Off Returns averaging a whopping 23.74 yards per return. It was the baseball diamond where Dawson really shined. Standing 6’3”, Marcellus was not the size of your typical high school shortstop. As a junior Marcellus earned 2nd Team All Conference for his play at short. Dawson’s senior year he set school records in batting average (.551), hits (43), home runs (7), stolen bases (22), and runs scored (43). He was named All Conference, All Suburban and 1st Team All State. He was the Team MVP, Conference Player of the Year, the Journal Sentinel Player of the Year and the WBCA State Player of the Year. Additionally, Marcellus was named the WBCA All Star Game MVP. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 1999 Draft and the Boston Red Sox in the 2000 Draft but decided to forego professional ball and remain in college. He played at the University of Nebraska where he was member of the 2001 College World Series team before finishing his career at UW-Milwaukee. Marcellus is currently the Head Baseball coach at University School of Milwaukee.
