Pat Ames was a track and cross country powerhouse at Tosa East, lettering every year he went out for both sports and setting multiple records. As a cross country runner, Ames helped lead his team to a conference championship, a sectional championship, and a state appearance. As a track star, Ames set every 800-meter record at Tosa East and set the conference record as well. He also set the Tosa East 440-meter freshman record and was part of the 3200-meter relay team which set the Tosa East record. In addition, Ames was back-to-back conference champion, finished second at state his junior year, and won the state championship as a senior in the 800-meter event. He was also part of the 1600-meter relay team that finished third at state his senior year. Ames was honored with the Red Raider Award for outstanding athletic achievement and was a National High School Track and Field All-American, ranking as the 8th fastest 800-meter runner in the country. After graduation, Ames attended Texas A&M on a full athletic scholarship before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was part of two Big Ten Champion track teams, was an NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Champion and All-American, and was part of an NCAA Division I record-setting relay team.
