Roger Erickson was recognized early on for his leadership ability and passion for student athletics, and was quickly appointed to the assistant coach position for both the track and football teams. Within five seasons, he was promoted to head coach of the track team, a position he held for 28 years. During his tenure as head track coach, Erickson led his teams to seven Conference Championships, and coached individual athletes to six state championships, 16 sectional championships, and 27 outdoor conference championships. Additionally, Erickson helped the football team win five conference championships during his tenure as assistant football coach. After Erickson stepped down as head coach of the track team, he stayed on as the assistant coach for an additional eight seasons. In addition to coaching, Erickson compiled and updated all of the Wauwatosa and Wauwatosa East freshman, sophomore, and varsity track records dating back to 1924. Even after fully retiring from coaching in 2007, Erickson continues to participate in Tosa East athletics, volunteering at cross country and track meets and serving as a clerk of course. Erickson’s enthusiasm and dedication to Tosa East athletics inspired countless student athletes over the course of his impressive career.
