Former Olympian, track, and cross-country Coach Don Gehrman referred to Bill Gill as one of the finest runners he ever had the pleasure of coaching. Bill, a highly motivated and dedicated distance man, was particularly noted for his exceptional leadership skills. He earned nine letters during high school. His leadership was evident when he served as Team Captain for the 1958 and 1959 Cross Country teams and qualified for the State Meet both years. His ability to lead by example and motivate his team was truly inspiring. In track, he also served as Team Captain for the 1959 and 1960 seasons, qualifying for the State Meet. Bill was also a member of the 1959 (3:40.7) and 1960 (3:34.3) Medley Relay teams who won back-to-back events at the State Meet. To improve his endurance when he wasn’t running for the Red Raiders, “Willie” participated on the swimming team, earning three letters. Following graduation, Bill enlisted in the military, where he demonstrated his courage and commitment by serving his country during the Vietnam War.
