When Edward “Rusty” Garst first jumped into the pool Coach Bob Hanke knew he had a natural free-styler. Technique can be taught but there are little nuances to a stroke that are done without effort, without thought, which allows the swimmer to propel himself through the water just a little faster than the competitor in the next lane. This is particularly significant in the sprints. Garst had the gift. He kept his eyes towards the bottom of the pool naturally, rather than forward which tilts the head just enough to give the hips a slight drop in the water. It’s tenths of seconds that matter in the sprints and any extra drag on the body add them. “Rusty” had the ability to move his arms rapidly and keep them moving so his speed was consistent. He got moving fast and and kept moving fast. In his sophomore, junior and senior years he was undefeated. Garst was individual Suburban Conference Champion in the 25 and 50 Free Style in 1945, 1946, and 1947, leading Tosa to the Suburban Conference Team Championship all three years. He was individual State Champion in the 25 and 50 Free Style in 1945, 1946, and 1947, leading Tosa to the team State Championship all three years. He achieved All American recognition all three years of his high school career. Three seasons undefeated, six Suburban Conference Championships, six State Championships, three All American honors. Edward “Rusty” Garst, a natural!
