Richard “Dick” Philipp earned four letters as a single sport athlete in swimming which was an unofficial requirement of Coach Bob Hanke, who elevated the Wauwatosa High Swim Team to great heights during the late 1930s and 1940s.

Dick’s commitment and ability were immediately recognized by Coach Hanke, a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication, when Dick earned a letter for his contributions during his first year. From there, things progressed quickly for Dick, who specialized in the breaststroke and made considerable contributions to swimming individually and in relay events. Dick was a two-time state champion in the 100 breaststroke, setting a state record in 1941 with a time of 1:12.7. His senior year, he won the runner-up silver medal, a testament to his individual success. As a key member of the medley relay, Dick  demonstrated his team spirit and leadership, winning the 150 relay State Championship in 1940 and 1941 with impressive times of 1:29.9 and 1:32.5. The team also won silver medal honors at State for their performance in 1942. Dick was a member of the 1940 State Championship team and the 1939 and 1941 State Runner-up teams. Upon graduation, Dick enlisted in the service, and following the conclusion of WWII, Dick went on to swim for the University of Wisconsin.
